Join Uncle Steve Russell from Gerringong for a four-hour workshop on traditional net-making. A skilled Bidjigal weaver and craftsman, Uncle Steve hails from the famous La Perouse Timbery family, known for their contributions to visual arts. His mother, Esme Timbery, is an award-winning shellworker, and his great-great-grandmother "Queen" Emma Timbery, had her shellworks displayed in London in 1910. With a rich family heritage in arts and crafts, Uncle Steve brings deep cultural knowledge passed down through generations.

Born at La Perouse Mission on Botany Bay, Uncle Steve’s work as a celebrated artist includes weavings, drawings, and sculptures held in galleries and collections. This hands-on workshop will explore traditional net-making techniques using dyed jute, ideal for beginners. While the traditional process of harvesting materials takes longer, this session will focus on the practical skills of weaving.

You will break for lunch during the workshop, offering a chance to reflect on the cultural and historical significance of fishing rights on the South Coast, a vital issue for local communities.

Materials will be prepared and dyed using bush resources the afternoon before, with the guidance of Joanna Fowles on Friday. If attending this Fishing Nets workshop, attendees are welcome to join the this preparation session with Joanna Fowles as well.

Does not cater for people with access needs.
