It’s not every winery that offers a helipad, but Silos Estate does, so flitting down to Berry to visit this sprawling estate is an easy flight for those in possession of a chopper.

Silos is equally welcoming to non-helicopter owners, however, who’ll enjoy not only the captivating views over the green plains and the Great Dividing Range escarpment beyond, but fabulous wines, award-winning accommodation and … alpacas (it’s a working alpaca farm, specialising in the Huacaya breed).

The estate is fashioned from a circa-1870 dairy farm, and its 4.8 hectares is planted with chardonnay, semillon, sauvignon blanc, shiraz, merlot, cabernet sauvignon and malbec grapes, all under the Silos Estate banner. The winery also established an offshoot, Wiley’s Creek, in 2007, creating gewürztraminer, riesling, muscat and pinot from grapes sourced from regions including the Yarra Valley, Tumbarumba and the Hunter.

You can stay here, too: two cottages (a Spa Suite and a Sitting Room Suite) with private balconies where you can breathe in the air and the aromas of those award-winning wines.
