Discover Ella and Hazel Porter’s 1920s childhood. Experience a world of non-plastic toys, beautiful school handwriting and Globite school ports.
Visitors can turn the pages of newly acquired replicas of the museum’s schoolbooks. They’ll discover what Hazel learned in hygiene class, how she was taught to draw, and the poems thought suitable for small children.
The Porter girls and their father all made the short journey to Cooks Hill during their school days. The museum’s school magazines, photographs, reports, certificates, and prizes paint a fascinating picture of school life. Young visitors can compare their own school photographs with those of Ella and Hazel and check how their classrooms and reports differ.
Wonderful toys from the Miss Porter’s House collection are also on display. Tin-plate mechanical toys are a favourite and probably date from before 1914. Visitors also love the the early dolls made from wood and cloth and recall the changes from cloth to pre-plastics, early celluloid and the more modern soft plastics.
