Throughout the plateau surrounding Wollongbar are subtropical parks and gardens, including Victoria Park Nature Reserve, a remnant of the 'Big Scrub' - the vast rainforest which once blanketed the region.
There are numerous farms producing many different foods and produce on the rich red volcanic soil of the plateau - flowers, coffee beans, macadamias, stone fruit, citrus, honey and more. The area boasts some lovely bed and breakfasts and venues for weddings and functions.
In the heart of a lush farming region, it is appropriate that one of Wollongbar’s original homesteads, the 1900 Killarney farm residence, is now the beautifully renovated Bellowing Bull, famed as a steakhouse for many years. Wollongbar Shopping Village has all conveniences for locals and visitors and is adjacent a modern tavern. The area has recently become popular with hobby farmers and services a number of rural residential properties as well as the traditional farmers working the rich volcanic soils. Crops include peanuts and custard apples as well as a wide range of other produce and cattle.
