Gwabegar is 139 kilometres South West of Narrabri. It is located deep in the Pilliga Forest, which is key to its existence and known as the "Heart of the Pilliga", the largest naturally forming Cypress Pine Forest in the Southern Hemisphere. The timber industry was once the mainstay of the town with twelve sawmills operating, but they have been closed, leaving farming as the main source of income.
Enjoy the drive from Narrabri to Gwabegar that features rapidly changing landscapes from ranges to sweeping plains and is a great place to start to explore the Pilliga State Forrest. The small town has a post office, general store, sports courts and a new community technology centre.
Once home to 12 sawmills, its koala and sleeper cutter colonies are now main attractions. Free camping is available at Anzac Park.
