Meet the koalas
The Koala Hospital, located on the grounds of historic Roto House, is dedicated to the care of koalas. The hospital is open to visitors everyday between 8-4:30 and guided tours take place at 3pm. Meet the resident koalas, see the afternoon feeding and learn about koala conservation at the free-to-enter facility.
Hit the beach
With 17 glorious beaches, you’re spoilt for choice in Port Macquarie. Whether you’re after great surf, secluded bays or fishing spots, you’ll find it here. Much loved Shelly Beach is a popular beach for surfing and fishing, with stunning views of Belowla Island. Experienced surfers should check out Lighthouse Beach, Town Beach and Grants Beach, and beginners can take a lesson with Port Macquarie Surf School.
Ride a camel
Head to Lighthouse Beach for a unique experience with Port Macquarie Camel Safaris. Whilst you’re led along the sands by expert cameleers, you’ll learn the history behind Australia’s camels and interesting facts about the incredible animals. Keep an eye on the ocean as you go, as it’s common to see dolphins and even whales during the migration season. No booking required.
Immerse yourself in the rainforest
Head to Sea Acres Rainforest Centre to explore the beautiful Sea Acres National Park, one of the largest remaining coastal rainforest reserves in New South Wales. Learn about local Aboriginal culture, try Aboriginal bush tucker or take a Discovery tour. There are monthly events including meditation and yoga in the rainforest, as well as a beautiful café nestled amidst a magnificent grove of bangalow palms.
Try local produce
Twilight Tastings is an annual celebration of local producers and live music. Taking place in March at the Wauchope Showground, the event features beer, wine and spirit tasting, and local restaurants and producers. It’s the perfect opportunity to discover Port Macquarie’s fantastic food and drink offering all in one place, and meet the people behind it.
In May is the Slice of Haven Food, Wine and Beer Festival, which showcases food and drink from the Camden Haven. Each year has a different theme, with 2020’s still to be announced… so keep your eyes peeled!
Ride a jet boat
Enjoy an adrenaline rush with Port Jet Cruise Adventures and take the Ocean Blast Fun Ride – a 40 minute jet boat experience along the beautiful NSW coast. You’ll ride on one of the fastest commercial boats in the State, with top speeds in excess of 100km per hour. You may even spot dolphins and turtles as you travel through the water, and whales during the migration season.
