Stanwell Park
Stanwell Beach, Wollongong
Known for its hang gliding and paragliding pursuits, Stanwell Park is an idyllic beach town that offers breathtaking views of the NSW South Coast. Found on the southern edge of the Royal National Park, indulge in an assortment of adventures, from horse riding and bushwalking to motorcycle cruises and paintball.
This pretty-as-a-picture village, just north of Wollongong, is an internationally famous area for hang gliding and paragliding. In fact, it holds an important place in aviation history. Stanwell Park is where Australian aeronautical pioneer Lawrence Hargrave first flew his box kite in 1894.
For the thrill of a lifetime, try a tandem glide with HangglideOz or SkySurf at Stanwell Tops. From Bald Hill lookout, watch hang gliders and paragliders fly above the cliffs and ocean, and enjoy stunning views of the village and beautiful Stanwell Park Beach. Or watch it all play out from the sand below.
There are many other things to do in Stanwell Park. Visit the Symbio Wildlife Park, where you'll meet native and exotic animals, and hand-feed kangaroos. Tour the area on a Harley Davidson with Just Cruisin’ Motorcycle Tours, or follow the Grand Pacific Walk from Stanwell Park to Coalcliff, the first completed stage of this magnificent new coastal path, which is suitable for both walkers and cyclists.
Horse riding is another great way to explore the area. Otford Farm and Darkes Forest Riding Ranch offer trail rides for all types of riders. Visit the Apple Shack at Glenbernie Orchard, and buy fresh and dried fruits, cider and honey, or pick your own fruit.
Foodies are well catered for in this tiny hamlet. Enjoy delicious sandwiches at LOAF Cafe, Mexican food and gelato at Uluwatu Blue or visit the ice-cream van at the Flying High Café at Bald Hill. If you’re looking for something fancier, Tumbling Waters Retreat offers a tasting menu with ingredients sourced from the local region.
Stanwell Park is just over an hour’s drive south of Sydney. You can also catch the train from Sydney and the journey takes one hour. Places to stay in Stanwell Park include stylish holiday houses, cosy cottages, oceanfront campgrounds and high-end boutique retreats.
