Scenic aerial of Robertson in the Southern Highlands, Country NSW
Robertson
Nestled in the green heart of the Southern Highlands, Robertson is a picturesque village surrounded by lush rainforest and undulating farmland. So it’s no surprise that it provided the setting for the blockbuster Australian film Babe. Base yourself in this tranquil hamlet and explore the region on one of the many driving or walking trails.
Waterfalls & treetop adventures
Surrounded by spectacular waterfalls and countryside, Robertson unrolls breathtaking wonders from its perch on the Illawarra escarpment. Take a short drive south to Belmore Falls. These plunging waterfalls plummet into Kangaroo Valley. Missingham and Warris Chair lookout tracks also have sweeping vistas of the valley. If you have time to spare, take the 20min drive to Carrington Falls to tackle the short walking track.
Have a picnic at Nellies Glen and relax to the sound of the cascades. Nature lovers will also enjoy the Rainforest walking track in the Robertson Nature Reserve. For a memorable adventure, visit Illawarra Fly Treetop Adventures, a 10min drive from Robertson, where you can soar on Australia’s highest zipline and walk along the 1.5-kilometre Treetop Walk.
Colourful heritage & galleries
Take a step back in time on the Robertson Heritage Walk. This trail takes in some of the town’s notable heritage points of interest, including the historic Post Office and Police Station. You’re also in for a treat with the Big Potato, a quirky local landmark built in 1979 to promote the town’s abundance of red soil potatoes.
Explore more local history at the National Trust-listed Robertson Heritage Railway Station. The former workman's shed now also includes an art gallery. You’ll also be inspired by brilliant contemporary artworks at The SHAC . This is also home to Green Door Studios, a creative space that hosts workshops and classes.
Beer gardens & fine dining
Home to delicious cafes and eateries, you’ll sample some of the region’s finest in Robertson. Enjoy some rustic charm matched with fine food in a beer garden at the Robertson Public House. Moonacres is an award-winning restaurant with delicious paddock to plate experiences.
Be sure to visit the famous Robertson Pie Shop and choose from a huge range of sweet and savoury pies. Another treat is the old Robertson Cheese Factory , which has been serving delicious cheeses since 1936. Pick up some homemade cheese from the dairy store or enjoy a bite to eat in the cafe.
Getting there
Robertson is less than two hours’ drive from Sydney and just over two hours from Canberra. You can also take the train to Moss Vale and connect via coach, with the whole journey taking around three hours. Accommodation options include The Robertson Hotel, which was built in 1924 and once considered the most luxurious hotel in the Commonwealth.
