Stand up paddleboarding experience in Shoal Bay, Port Stephens
An idyllic scene awaits in Shoal Bay's white sand beach, framed by a heritage lighthouse and Tomaree Head. This charming hamlet serves as a perfect base for paddle boarding and exploring Port Stephens' natural wonders, including dolphin and koala spotting and scenic hikes with unforgettable views.
The calm aquamarine waters of Shoal Bay are perfect for swimming, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding – you can take a SUP lesson with Port Stephens Paddlesports. Dolphin, whale and scuba diving tours depart from nearby Nelson Bay.
At the eastern end of Shoal Bay is the magnificent Tomaree National Park. Follow the paved Fort Tomaree walk around the headland for reminders of Australia’s World War II coastal defence. From here, take the Tomaree Head summit walk for a breathtaking panorama of Port Stephens and the NSW North Coast. You can even spot whales during the migration season. Alternatively, hire a bike with Nelson Bay Bike Hire and explore the scenic foreshore. You’ll find picnic tables and barbecue facilities in the beachside reserve. Stop on your way for a swim from the jetty at Shoal Bay Beach.
Continue onto Zenith Beach, nestled within Tomaree National Park and the Great Lakes Marine Park, is a stunning coastal retreat known for its rugged headlands and pristine environment. This beach not only provides a habitat for diverse wildlife, including dolphins and various bird species, but also offers visitors a range of activities such as leisurely walks and breathtaking views from nearby summits.
In and around the national park, you’ll see koalas munching on swamp mahogany, a species of eucalypt. Head south and there are gorgeous ocean-facing beaches to discover, including the pretty Fingal Bay Beach, which is tucked into Fingal Head. Or take the short walk through coastal forest to Wreck Beach.
A 15-minute drive away is Anna Bay, a gateway to the incredible Stockton Bight Sand Dunes in the Worimi Conservation Lands. There are plenty of adventure tours around the dunes, including quad biking, camel rides, sandboarding and 4WDing.
Shoal Bay offers a selection of cafes, restaurants and takeaway fish and chips shops. At the Shoal Bay Country Club, enjoy breakfast at Mermaids Cafe, lunch or dinner at Atmos restaurant while overlooking the ocean with tasty cocktails on the sunny patio. The club is directly across from the beach and hosts live music on the weekends.
There are a range of accommodation options in Shoal Bay to choose from, including holiday parks, cabins, apartments and stylish resorts such as Ramada Resort. Shoal Bay is a 2.45-hour drive north from Sydney and a 40-minute drive northeast from Newcastle Airport, making it an accessible getaway for travellers. Upon arrival, various transportation options are available, including car rentals, limousines, and door-to-door shuttle buses that facilitate easy travel to Port Stephens and its surrounding areas. Public bus services also connect Shoal Bay and nearby towns such as Nelson Bay.
