Echuca Moama
Murray River Paddle Steamers, Echuca
Hop aboard a paddle-steamer, visit waterside wineries and soak up rich riverboat heritage. Once Australia’s largest inland port, towering river red gums provide a spectacular backdrop to the twin towns of Echuca and Moama, found on either side of the mighty Murray River.
Australia’s paddle-steamer capital for more than 150 years, today Echuca retains the largest paddle-steamer fleet in the country with many lively river experiences to enjoy. Dine at Redgums Restaurant on the classic PS Emmylou, or experience an overnight paddle boat journey, enjoying a roaring riverside campfire.
Combine a cruise on PS Canberra or Pride of the Murray with a relaxing lunch at Morrisons Riverside Winery. You can also canoe the Murray River or Barmah Lake with Murray River Canoe Trails. Or paddle out on the Edward River, a peaceful, lesser-known alternative to the nearby Murray River.
St Anne's is another winery located on the banks of the Murray. The neighbouring Perricoota wine region is best known for its shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay.
At the Echuca Moama Market, you’ll find everything from arts and crafts to food and wine, and at Hammond Providore cafe, indulge in exceptional coffee and breakfast. Follow the Echuca Moama Food and Wine Trail to sample the region’s gourmet treats.
You’ll find many more things to do, from bushwalking and mountain biking to waterskiing, swimming at Moama Beach and a visit to the fun inflatables of Aqua Island. Explore Ramsar-listed wetlands and the world’s largest river red gum forests in the Murray Valley and Barmah national parks, which are full of birdlife, or take a leisurely stroll through Moama Botanic Gardens.
You’ll find plenty of places to stay, from campgrounds and caravan parks to motels and family-friendly options, such as the fantastic Tindarra Resort and Moama Riverside Holiday and Tourist Park, perched right next to the water. Go glamping in the bush at Talo Retreat or enjoy a night of luxury at Moira Station. There are also houseboats for hire.
The drive to Echuca Moama from Sydney takes around 8hr 30min. From Melbourne or Albury it is 2h 30min. You can catch the train from Sydney to Albury or fly into Albury Airport and hire a car.
