On the historic banks of the Murray River, the charming twin cities of Albury and Wodonga offer a delicious food scene, endless outdoor adventure and a thriving arts culture. With the Snowy Mountains and Rutherglen wine region nearby, this area makes a great stopover on the Melbourne-Sydney drive at any time of the year. Linger longer in an area that is always in season.
The Murray River is a natural playground. Go swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding and cycling at Noreuil Park. Explore the beauty of the river by hiring canoes from Murray River Canoe Hire or joining a guided tour. Kids will love Oddies Creek Adventure Playspace, with its 30m flying fox.
Cycle or walk the scenic Wagirra Trail, an eight-kilometre journey along the river that captures Wonga Wetlands, a birdwatcher’s paradise, and the Yindyamarra Sculpture Walk, which tells the story of Aboriginal history and the cultural significance of the Murray River. You can also fish and boat on Lake Hume.
The Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA) is one of the best regional galleries in Australia. You’ll find contemporary art and important Indigenous works. Another great local art experience is watching the Flying Fruit Fly Circus perform and taking circus classes. Visit the beautiful Albury Botanic Gardens for wild colours – the garden and flower show Gardenesque is in October – and the Bonegilla Migrant Experience, an army camp that was turned into a reception and training centre for new migrants post-World War II.
For delicious local dining visit Yardbird, a new eatery dishing up Mediterranean-inspired plates cooked over fire, or Bistro Selle, a European-style restaurant showcasing local produce. Or enjoy breakfast or lunch by the water at the River Deck.
The best of fresh local produce awaits at the Albury Wodonga Farmers Market, held every Sunday. Explore the local events for more markets, shows, festivals and exhibitions, including Write Around the Murray in September.
You’ll find plenty of accommodation options including hotels, apartments, B&Bs and holiday parks. Feel right at home by settling in at Rose Cottage, a quaint heritage holiday house with a gorgeous garden terrace. The boutique CIRCA 1928, housed in the former Commonwealth Bank building in the heart of the CBD, is perfect for couples. Or the Atura, centrally located on Dean Street, makes a great base – be sure to pick up bikes from reception to start exploring everything Albury has to offer.
Albury Wodonga is a 5.5-hour drive southwest of Sydney and 3.5-hour northeast of Melbourne. You can also fly into the Albury Airport and hire a car to explore the region. Arriving by train at the grand Albury Railway Station is a wonderful experience – the trip from Sydney takes around 7.5 hours.
